Dear Intertribal Nursery Council Participants:

Annual Meeting and Workshop:
2011 marks the 11th annual Intertribal Nursery Council (INC) meeting and 9th annual INC nursery training workshop. We are pleased to announce this year's gathering will be hosted jointly by the USDA Forest Service and the Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians. The event will be held September 13-15, in Temecula, California.

A Call for Presentations:
The INC hosts are seeking speakers for this year's annual meeting. In the past, presentation topics included overviews or updates from tribal nurseries, restoration efforts using native plants, native plant research projects, and conservation education efforts. If you or someone you know would like to present a topic, please contact Jeremy as soon as possible. Presentations will be held Tuesday and Wednesday morning (September 13 and 15). Presenters will have the opportunity to publish their presentations as papers in the National Nursery Proceedings, a USDA Forest Service publication.

Tour and Dinner
Tours are being planned for Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons (September 13 and 14). Tour stops include a visit to the Pechanga Nursery as well as other local restoration locations/attractions. Following Wednesday's tour, the Pechanga Tribe will host a traditional-style dinner.

Nursery Training Workshop
Since the publication of the USDA Agricultural Handbook 730, Nursery Manual for Native Plants: A Guide for Tribal Nurseries, the INC has initiated the teaching of Nursery Training Modules taken directly from the manual. These modules cover content from the publication's individual chapters, in addition to the latest information available since publication. The goal is to have each module taught by the chapter's author, or co-author, as well as provide some hands-on learning. If you have any requests as to the Modules you would like to see covered this year, please let Jeremy Pinto know as soon as possible. The nursery training workshop will cover one to two topics and will be held on Thursday, September 15.

Tribal Colleges/Universities Panel
Education has always been an important topic of discussion among INC members. A panel featured in this year's meeting will allow Tribal Colleges/Universities and INC meeting participants to discuss the future of nursery training needs and opportunities for students. For example, what kinds of classes offer the most relevant skills and information to native plant nurseries? What schools have those classes? What opportunities are there for advanced degrees? Are there on-line educational opportunities? By the end of the panel, we hope to identify the pertinent educational needs, and hopefully provide some direction for both panel and INC participants.

Travel Grants
The USDA Forest Service has secured grant money to help pay travel and registration costs for individuals attending the INC nursery meeting. A limited number of grants are available and will be awarded to students and tribes with limited or no travel funds. Priority will be given to those tribes that have nurseries, or are in the planning stages of nursery development. Contact Jeremy to have a grant application sent to you.

Location and Lodging
Activities and lodging will take place at the Pechanga Resort Casino in Temecula, California (located at 45000 Pechanga Parkway). A limited number of reduced rate rooms are available by mentioning the "Tribal Nursery Meeting." Rates are estimated to start at $109/night plus tax; call 888-PECHANGA (732-4264) for reservations.
