Late last year, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs Larry Echo Hawk announced proposed regulations that would make sweeping changes to the manner in which renewable energy leases on Tribal Lands are reviewed and approved. These proposed regulations have now undergone several rounds of comments and are headed toward enactment later this year.
When these regulations become effective, they will give Indian nations with renewable resources the ability to negotiate new deals with a high level of certainty of timely approval by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. They will also provide a set of specific rules and guidelines for renewable energy leases.
