On May 6, 2011 the Director of the U.S. EPA Pesticide Re-evaluation Division in the Office of Pesticide Programs requested that tribal agencies inform the Office of Pesticide Programs (OPP) if they want prior notification of applications of soil fumigants planned in their jurisdictions. (States were also asked to respond.) If your tribe wants to be notified of soil fumigant applications, you should immediately notify EPA (contact information below) and indicate your preferred method of notification (phone call, FAX, email with specific names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses). Ultimately, EPA will compile a list (to be published on EPA's web site) of those tribes and states that wish to be notified prior to soil fumigant applications. Even if you have a tribal notification system in place, partaking in this notification system will help ensure that you are aware of soil fumigation applications in your area. EPA originally requested this information by May 27, 2011 so we encourage you to contact OPP immediately if you want to be notified of soil fumigant applications. To inform OPP of your notification preferences, contact Dana Friedman at 703-347-8827 or via friedman.dana@epa.gov.
According to OPP, a few tribes in Region 9 have already responded: Gila River, Pechanga, Salt River, and Yurok.
