Beaumont strikes agreement with Morongo .
Wednesday, September 22, 2010 8:33 PM California - Water .The city entered into an agreement with the Morongo Band of Mission Indians on Tuesday to allow the band to store imported water in the Beaumont Groundwater Basin.
The City Council voted 4-1, with council member Nancy Gall as the lone dissenter.
The agreement will start the planning process to provide 50,000 acre-feet of space in the Beaumont Groundwater Basin for Morongo to store high-quality water.
"This is a wonderful thing for the entire Pass area," said Councilman Paul St. Martin.
The city is obliged to manage the groundwater stored in the basin. It also has the right to store up to 22,000 acre-feet of water there.
The council's vote is a step in a process that may end with the Morongo Band of Mission Indians providing a new water source to the city.
