Dear PNW Tribal Climate Change Network,
Greetings from the National Adaptation Forum in Denver, CO! The first day began with a fantastic panel of tribal case studies highlighting climate adaptation initiatives from the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community, and the Yurok Tribe.
I'm sending out a quick reminder following last weeks discussion about the need for strong tribal participation in the comment process for the National Climate Assessment. Comments must be submitted online by April 12, 2013 at http://ncadac.globalchange.gov/. I created a google docs form to share information on the various chapters of the NCA and some initial comments. By this Friday, April 5th, please add any comments and thoughts you may have to this document. By Monday, April 8th, I will send out an updated document with comments for tribal consideration when submitting comments to the NCA. The spreadsheet is available on google docs at: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc ... sp=sharing. Please feel free to add comments, questions or other suggestions. If you have any trouble with the spreadsheet, please let me know.
Note that I've only just begun to conduct a scan of the NCA chapters (available at: http://ncadac.globalchange.gov/) and have been looking for mentions of tribes, tribal communities, indigenous communities and native communities. The worksheet begins to describe chapters that mention tribes in some way, information on how that chapter mentions or addresses tribes, and highlighted information for potential comments. The Alaska/Arctic and Great Plains chapters provide strong examples of inclusive information on tribal populations, observed and potential impacts on tribes, and potential information that could be included in other regional chapters.
