About the Presentation: ATSDR and USEPA Region 5 have continued to collaborate on the growing problem of indoor pesticide misuse and the residential contamination that sometimes results. Desperate to rid their homes of difficult to control pests, homeowners and renters are exposing themselves and their families to excessive amounts of pesticides, sometimes leading to immediate health effects. In this presentation, we will discuss our review of the National Pesticide Information Center database of calls describing significant misuse and overapplication of pesticides, and associated issues. We'll discuss current EPA research on assessing and remediating pesticide contaminated homes, which present many challenges to health and regulatory agencies. Since many of the misuse incidents are related to the growing bed bug epidemic, we'll also cover integrated bed bug management approaches. This is a follow-up webinar responding to interest from our previous presentation in October 2011.
Course Objectives:
• Describe the various circumstances involved in the misuse and overapplication of pesticides;
• Discuss trends in pesticide misuse/overapplication from a national database of pesticide-related calls;
• Describe research efforts to provide tools for agencies responding to cases involving indoor pesticide contamination; and
• Understand safer, more effective pest control options to avoid pesticide misuse.
About the Presenters:
Michelle Colledge is a senior research officer, and earned her MPH from Florida A&M University and her Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health. She has worked for ATSDR since 1999. Since working in the region 5 office, Michelle has lead multi-agency and multi-disciplinary teams in public health investigations, risk and exposure assessment, and provides technical assistance to partner agencies for emergency response activities. She loves to create art and music, has a husband who makes stringed instruments, and has two energetic young to keep her very busy.
Amy Mysz has worked in EPA’s pesticide program since 1999. She provides general information and technical support on pesticide exposure and risk issues, pesticide safety, and pest management practices. She serves as the regional contact for collecting and reporting pesticide incidents, and assists local, state and federal agencies in responding to exposure situations. These experiences have lead to Amy's interest in indoor fate, transport and cleanup of pesticides, as well as conducting outreach on integrated pest management in urban environments. Prior to joining EPA in 1997, she worked as an environmental health and safety consultant, a Federal Investigator, and a Private Investigator. In her free time, Amy studies tai chi and travels extensively. She is an avid outdoor enthusiast who spends time hiking, kayaking and cycling, among other hobbies.
