As some of you may have heard during the Annual Tribal EPA conference a few weeks ago in San Francisco, EPA Region 9 is offering free waste characterization trainings to tribes. For this training, EPA provides contractor services to assist in conducting the waste audit (dump, sort and identify municipal solid waste) and who will provide a final report of the audit findings to the host Tribe. We are looking for 3-4 tribes to host this on-site training at their transfer station or other similar venue. Below are the criteria we will consider when selecting sites to conduct the audit and training. Please let me know by December 10, 2010 if your Tribe is interested in hosting this training, and if so when you could host it. We plan to start holding these trainings in early 2011 and throughout the year.

Criteria for Hosting Audit Training:

•The tribal facility has adequate space to safely conduct the waste audit with up to 20 people participating (neighboring tribes will be invited to participate);

•There is sufficient solid waste to conduct a waste characterization audit (at least 2,000 lbs);

•The Tribe has staff to assist in coordinating the training with U.S. EPA and waste hauler (if applicable);

•The Tribe can provide 18 months of solid waste generation and disposal data (volume, weight, cost/ton) and any past solid waste studies. (Ideal, not required)

•The Tribe has a need to conduct a waste characterization audit, and results from this audit will inform their solid waste management program.

•The Tribe agrees to share environmental results for public educational and outreach purposes.

•At least one participant from the hosting Tribe has had 40 hours of HAZWOPER training. We encourage all participants to have at least 24 hour HAZWOPER training. However, this is not required.

Also, just a heads up…

We are considering conducting another Transfer Station Training in 2011 and are looking for a Tribe to work with us to host this 2.5 day event. The training would cover various aspects of the design and operation of a tribal transfer station, from understanding your waste stream and working with the tribal government and community, through designing and operating the transfer station, to creating a sustainable program.

For more information about the transfer station training, please contact Nancy Sockabasin at (415) 972-3772, or sockabasin.nancy@epa.gov.

Thanks,

Michelle
