Sept. 19, 2012 (1:00-3:00 EDT) -- Creating a Pesticide PPE Informational Brochure and Making it Widely Available
Speakers:
Kim Faulkner, PhD, MPH, Epidemiologist/Statistician, NIOSH/NPPTL
Carol Somody, PhD, MS, Senior Stewardship Manager, Syngenta
A new PPE training brochure, “Dress for Success: Some Things to Know about Personal Protective Equipment BEFORE You Handle a Pesticide” was produced as a collaboration between the National Association of County Agricultural Agents, the National Pesticide PPE Training Solutions Committee (NTSC), and Syngenta. Dr. Carol Somody will present on the partnership/process/challenges of creating this brochure, and the challenges that more comprehensive brochures and simpler factsheets must overcome. She will also explain the “PES model” of freely sharing educational content, brochures, quizzes, and self-assessment tools to assist with pesticide safety and stewardship outreach throughout the US and beyond. This model needs wide consideration because the need for pesticide safety and stewardship education will continue to increase even as financial resources decline.

Nov. 14, 2012 (1:30-3:30 EST) -- Selecting Respirators for Pesticide Handling Exposures
Speakers:
Kim Faulkner, PhD, MPH, Epidemiologist/Statistician, NIOSH National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory
Roland Berry-Ann, BS, Deputy Director, NIOSH National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory
Richard Pont, MS, U.S. EPA, Office of Pesticide Programs, Certification and Worker Protection Branch
Stan Thomas, Health and Safety Enforcement Manager, Oregon OSHA
Lisa Brosseau, ScD, CIH, Associate Professor, School of Public Health, University of Minnesota
Dean Herzfeld, PhD, Associate Extension Professor, Plant Pathology, University of Minnesota
Dan Musser, Masters Student, School of Public Health, University of Minnesota

This talk will briefly describe the different levels of protection offered by different types of respirators as well as methods for selecting appropriate air cleaning devices (cartridges for chemical exposures and filters for aerosol exposures). We will discuss advantages and disadvantages of different types of respirators for the range of tasks typically encountered during pesticide handling operations. Adequate time will be allotted for audience input and discussion. In particular, we will describe key issues faced by agricultural extension educators when training pesticide handlers about respiratory protection, job hazard analyses for pesticide handling tasks, the EPA approach to identifying respiratory protection, interpreting respirator recommendations on pesticide labels, protection factors for air purifying respirators, selecting the right chemical cartridge and filter, using the MSDS to enhance EPA label recommendations, and OSHA requirements for medical surveillance and fit testing.
