The Flow of Used and Waste Tires in the California-Mexico Border Region
Did you know that purchasing a new tire in Baja California (average cost: $60) is more expensive than a new tire in California (average cost: $45)? And did you know that in 2006, about 23% of reusable tires generated in California were exported to Baja California for reuse? Or that in 2008, imports from California generated more than $13 million in revenue for Mexico's used tire business, including $1.2 million in tax revenue for Mexican federal authorities?

All of these facts come from a report entitled The Flow of Used and Waste Tires in the California-Mexico Border Region, which was prepared by the Institute for Regional Studies of the Californias, San Diego State University Research Foundation, under contract from the California Integrated Waste Management Board. The report analyzes, in quantitative and qualitative terms, the flow of used tires that are exported from California into Mexico, including the states of Baja California and Baja California Sur and part of the state of Sonora. The report also estimates the economic impact of the flow in California and Baja California, discusses the environmental impacts of waste tire piles in Baja California, and details the ultimate disposition of tires from the transborder tire trade. In addition, the report provides recommendations for possible actions by the California Integrated Waste Management Board and agencies in Mexico to cooperate across the border to mitigate the negative impacts of the cross-border tire flow and to support the continuance of this binational commercial activity.
