Dear Colleague:

It is my pleasure to inform you of today’s release of the CEC report, Taking Stock: North American Pollutant Releases and Transfers. In a few days’ time, we will be mailing you a printed copy. In the meantime, the CEC news release and electronic copy of the report (in English, French and Spanish) are available via the CEC homepage http://www.cec.org .

This year’s report provides the most comprehensive picture available of Pollutant Release and Transfer Register (PRTR) reporting in North America. PRTRs for Canada, Mexico and the United States track annual data on pollutants released by facilities to air, water, land, or injected underground, as well as pollutants transferred for recycling, treatment or disposal. This report compiles and presents data for 2006, the latest available from all three countries at the time of writing, and features a special chapter on pollutant releases to surface waters.

I also encourage you to visit the Taking Stock Online website, http://www.cec.org/takingstock. It presents a brief overview of the 2006 data and features the integrated North American PRTR database with enhanced data searching and mapping capabilities, enabling you to explore different aspects of the reported data, including cross-border transfers. I hope that you will find these products useful in your ongoing efforts relating to protecting human health and the environment.

Thank you for your continued interest in the Taking Stock series. As always, we welcome your feedback on the report and website, and look forward to our continued collaboration.

Sincerely,

Dolores Wesson
