Border Drafting Committee Information & Tribal Call Notes

Post by NaepcA1 »

Border Tribes (26 tribes in three states CA, AZ, and TX)

Please find the attached call notes from the January 12 Conference Call and the Overarching Themes document provided by EPA. As you know comments regarding the draft overarching themes document need to be submitted to EPA, NAEPC, or the drafting committee's tribal representative, Campo Band of Kumeyaay Vice-Chairwoman Michelle Cuero. Her email is:

mcuero@campo-nsn.gov

As background, the US Mexico Border Region covers an area of over 2,000 miles and extends approximately 62 miles on each side of the international border. This is a biologically diverse area that encompasses urban and rural areas, deserts, mountains, wetlands, rivers and aquifers. There are 26 tribes located in the “Border Region” as defined by the US EPA. As tribes face increasing demands and impacts to their communities funding for infrastructure projects for water, air, and land together with environmental health, emergency response and stewardship remain priorities. US EPA has funded $613 million to U.S. and Mexico infrastructure projects with tribes receiving about $711,000. Tribes hold approximately 24% of the lands within the border area but accessed only slightly over .001% of the funding. It is essential that tribes participate in identifying the goals of the next generation Border Program to ensure that federal funding is received for projects vital to tribal communities.

Comments are due Honorable Campo Vice-Chairwoman Cuero. mcuero@campo-nsn.gov
