SW Tribal Climate Change Workshop Sept 13-14 Flagstaff

ITEP will offer an interactive 1½ day Climate Change workshop to tribal environmental and natural resource professionals in Arizona and New Mexico. It will be an opportunity to learn about climate change issues and concerns in the Southwest and to share ideas for addressing climate change through adaptation and mitigation strategies.

The workshop agenda will include:
• Traditional Ecological Knowledge and Western Science
• Observed Climate Change Impacts on Tribal Lands
• Overview of Climate Change (Global to Southwest)
• Water: Issues and Opportunities
• Land-based Resources: Issues and Opportunities
• Identifying Tribal Research and Resource Needs


The format will be short presentations followed by small group discussions. The workshop will begin with a continental breakfast at 7:45 am on Tuesday, September 13 and will conclude at 12:00 pm on Wednesday, September 14.

Space in the workshop will be limited to approximately 35 participants, including presenters. We will cover the hotel and per diem for tribal participants (people who are employed by a tribe or tribal organization). There is limited funding available for transportation costs (see Financial Assistance below), but we will accommodate as many requests as possible.

Lodging Arrangements:
ITEP will make hotel room reservations for the nights of September 12 and 13 for participants residing outside of Flagstaff. ITEP will pay for the hotel room and tax for tribal participants (people who are employed by a tribe or tribal organization); all other participants will be responsible for their hotel costs.

Per Diem: ITEP will reimburse tribal participants (people who work for a tribe or tribal organization) for their per diem following the workshop. Participants will need to submit reimbursement forms before reimbursements can be processed.

Transportation: All participants will be responsible for making their own travel arrangements to and from Flagstaff.

Transportation between hotel and workshop location:
• Van shuttle: ITEP will provide transportation by van between the hotel and the Du Bois Center.
• Walking: Participants are welcome to walk to the training location. (Plan approximately 15-20 minutes).


Financial Assistance:
Tribal participants may request financial assistance for transportation costs. ITEP will reimburse a maximum of $250 for mileage or airfare of approved requests, following the workshop. Reimbursement forms will need to be submitted before reimbursements can be processed (include MapQuest mileage or plane ticket itinerary and receipt).

The deadline for registering for the workshop is August 1, 2011. You will be notified in August by ITEP staff if your registration has been selected and if ITEP can accommodate your request for financial assistance.
