Environmental Specialist

Description: Under the supervision, of the Environmental Manager the Environmental Specialist will support the various functions related to water, air, land, solid waste, hazardous waste and other environmental needs of the Reservation.

The Soboba Environmental Specialist is involved in community outreach education of environmental issues, by promoting conservation and sustainability, and enhancing the tribal members enjoyment of the environment through teaching and interpreting the natural resources.

The range of activities carried out in the role varies from project to project. The Environmental Specialist will work with tribal departments and agencies, by giving presentations and taking part in and developing projects. This may also include presentations in schools or organizing community events and awareness activities. This position requires on occasion flexible hours, working outdoors and dealing with a wide scope of climate variances.

Duties: Although other duties may be assigned, the essential duties include the following:

Assisting environmental staff in project completion;

Researching and developing educational programs and resources for schools, and community groups to sites of special environmental interest;

Promoting educational programs and resources to the target audience through leaflets, websites and newsletters;

Work with colleagues, teachers and tribal community groups on the design and delivery of educational programs;

Giving presentations in schools or to tribal community groups on environmental issues;

Organizing events and activities to raise awareness of environmental issues;

Training others, such as tribal members, in the use of resources and in delivering educational sessions;

Researching and gathering scientific data;

Recruiting, supervising and working with volunteers;

Acting as a point of contact for teachers, educationalists and departments responding to requests for information on EPA educational issues;

Evaluating the effectiveness of programs and writing reports for the tribe or funding bodies;

Managing budgets for projects and educational programs;

Carrying out risk assessments, particularly for outdoor activities;

Providing office coverage when environmental staff is out;

Written communication regarding environmental issues.

Provide Clerical Support (typing, filing, copying, etc.)

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Knowledge of:
Principles, methods, practices, techniques common to EPA regulations and the Clean Water Act Sections 106 & 319; administrative principles and methods including goal setting, program development and implementation.

Ability to:
Prepare clear and concise records, reports, correspondence and other written materials; communicate ideas clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; maintain effective working relationships with, staff and other governmental personnel encountered in the course of the work.

Training and Experience:

AS or AA degree preferred. Completion of 12 semester units or the quarter unit equivalent in science related field.

2 years’ experience in data gathering for reports and delivering oral presentations; Experience in Native American Programs.

Experience working with Tribal Environmental Regulations and Federal grants.

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements

A valid California driver’s license and the ability to maintain insurability under the Tribes Vehicle Insurance Policy.

While performing the duties of this position, an employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand and talk or hear; walk or sit. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
