Nominations to National Urban and Community Forestry Council

Post by NaepcA1 »

One of the recommendations in the Sacred Sites Report is to provide opportunities for American Indians and Alaska Natives to serve on Forest Service advisory committees. It’s also just a good idea. The Agency has already moved in that direction with selection of Tribal members to serve on committees – including the selection of William Barquin of the Kootenai Tribe to serve on the Planning Rule committee. Here is another opportunity.

The National Urban and Community Forestry Council is focused on urban forestry – i.e. managing/sustaining trees and forest resources in cities and towns. It would be great to have a tribal representative who has insight/experience in natural resource programs in urban settings, tribal forests, or through tribal colleges on that committee. Urban forest management and city forestry is a growing sector that offers good career ladder options; we should take actions that help us diversify the workforce in this area, and help provide tribal perspectives on this committee.

Please help me distribute this opportunity to your tribal and intertribal partners. The call for nominations is posted now, with deadline August 31st. The program uses the nominations received over time, so if a position is not filled now, it may be filled later. Let’s help get some names in the hat. Here is a link to the call for nominations:
