Call for Applications: Native American Library Services - Basic Grants
Greetings -
The Library Services - Basic grant http://www.imls.gov/applicants/detail.aspx?GrantId=15 is a non-competitive IMLS grant. The funding varies from year to year depending on how many tribes apply (have to be federally recognized) and the total funding, but it has remained fairly consistent. In 2010 the basic grant was $6,000 with an optional additional $1,000 Educational/Assessment Option.
If you apply, please consider including the Educational/Assessment Option - the funds can be used for training including online courses, conferences including registration and travel, and travel to visit other libraries - or you can hire someone to do a community/library information needs assessment. If you find a librarian willing to do the assessment without charge, you can apply those funds to recommendations, i.e., computer, shelving, materials, etc.
If you apply for the basic grant you can apply for the Native American Library Services Grant: Enhancement Grant due May 1st, for up to $150,000 for 1 to 2 years http://www.imls.gov/applicants/detail.aspx?GrantId=16.
Your library does not have to look like a traditional public library. In California we have libraries in education, cultural and administration centers; environmental libraries; tribal history centers, ... Your library needs to address the information needs of your community.
Please contact me if I can be of further assistance.

Eligibility:
Indian tribes, Alaska native villages, regional corporations, and village corporations are eligible to apply for funding under the Native American Library Services grant program. Entities such as libraries, schools, tribal colleges, or departments of education are not eligible applicants, although they may be involved in the administration of this program and their staff may serve as project directors, in partnership with an eligible applicant.
For purposes of funding under this program, "Indian tribe" means any tribe, band, nation, or other organized group or community, including any Alaska native village, regional corporation, or village corporation (as defined in, or established pursuant to the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (43 U.S.C. § 1601 et seq.)), which is recognized by the Secretary of the Interior as eligible for the special programs and services provided by the United States to Indians because of their status as Indians. A list of eligible entities is available from the Bureau of Indian Affairs, except for the recognized Alaska native villages, regional corporations, and village corporations, which should refer to applicable provisions in the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, referenced above.
